Whatever Pace You Set – MIEM Pledges to Support You

We know that change is inevitable. Michigan faces incredible economic challenges, which are having a huge impact on our schools. As educators we juggle day-to-day challenges and federal and state legislation changing how we operate. We continue to keep our main goal at the top of our list and that’s teaching and learning. We are always racing to the top to provide the best educational experiences we can for Michigan’s students. This year will be one that has us all racing to meet the needs of our students. We are committed to continuing to be a highly functioning ‘pit crew’ helping you develop and grow. Whatever pace you set, we pledge to support you.

The MIEM Team is comprised of people who have a reputation of getting the job done and doing it right! We will continue to do that and look forward to seeing you at our events. Please provide feedback and/or ideas on how we can do an even better job of helping you. Let me know what you’re thinking. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Daniel G. Pappas, Executive Director MIEM

Michigan Leadership Improvement Framework Enhancement
21st Century Leadership for 21st Century Learners

The MI-LIFE Program has been providing a valuable professional learning opportunity for over 550 school administrators in Michigan. Because of the success of the program and based on evaluations and feedback from those who have participated in the first three cohorts, a fourth cohort of MI-LIFE will be offered beginning in August 2010 through March 2011.

The program will consist of six (6) face-to-face sessions and one (1) online course with intersession assignments between the face-to-face sessions. It will be conducted at seven different locations around the state.

  • Cheboygan-Otsego-Presque Isle ESD
  • Genesee ISD – Two groups
  • Ingham ISD
  • Kent ISD
  • Lansing School District
  • Macomb ISD
  • Wayne RESA

Successful completion in the program can result in 18 SB-CEU's or approved university credits and, if eligible, an administrator endorsement. The fee to participate in the entire MI-LIFE program is $1200 plus a small fee for processing SB-CEUs if desired. Several ISD/ESD/districts are subsidizing the tuition fee for individuals. Please check your selected site for more information. For complete information about the curriculum, courses, and schedule and to access the online application, visit the MI-LIFE web site and select the Cohort 4 Fast Link.

Eligibility: Participants must be current ISD, diocese, district, or building level administrators in public, non-public or charter schools.

Registration: Please go to the MIEM online registration under Events, select your site, and register.

Questions: Contact Jan Kesel, MI-LIFE Program Assistant, jkesel@mi-life.org or 248.881-2084.

Michigan Educator Evaluation: Implementing the New Law

Thursday, June 3, 2010 • 8:30 am - 4:30 pm • Kellogg Center, East Lansing, MI

The Michigan Educator Evaluation: Implementing the New Law is shaping up very nicely. This is a workshop that is a MUST to attend. As part of the program, we have Lisa Swem from Thrun Law Firm, P.C. discussing the implications of the new law. We also have two panels that will discuss the framework for the evaluation developed by MASSP, MEA and AFT along with a Collective Bargaining panel discussing how this will impact your contracts. During the day we will have clinic sessions addressing practical applications on how districts have begun to work through the process.

These sessions include:

  • Teacher Evaluation in the Context of Data Warehousing
  • Learning a Digital Collaborative Approach
  • Incorporating Peer Review into Contract Language
  • Implementing Teacher Merit Pay
  • A 360 Model of Evaluation for Administrators
  • Danielson and Marzano application – i-observation

There will also be guided discussion by all participants on:

  • Finding Time (restructuring, rethinking time allocation)

  • Identifying Data and Models for Growth

There will also be time to share practical ideas, ask questions and voice your concerns.

Superintendent Preparation Series Academy
Registration deadline is June 5.

The SUPES Academy is a comprehensive leadership development experience to prepare individuals who will be the next “class” of superintendent candidates. There will be an unprecedented number of superintendents retiring over the next decade. At the same time, fewer people with the necessary capacity-building experiences are aspiring to move into these critical leadership roles. It is critical that the new superintendents receive the best possible preparation and support available to help ensure success in their new assignments. An application process is required and can be found at www.gomiem.org. This is a four-part series and you must attend all four classes. The first class will be held August 12-13, 2010 in Lansing, MI. For dates and locations of other classes, log onto gomiem.org.

Register with MIEM at www.gomiem.org.

Cost: $800 for the entire series

Michigan Teaching For Learning Institute Instructional Practices Transformed

Tuesday, August 24-Thursday, August 26, 2010 • Lansing Center, Lansing

The 2010 Michigan Teaching for Learning Institute is designed to accelerate the achievement of all students through exploring and sharing educators’ beliefs and practice. Through examination of comprehensive sets of data and the current research on instructional practice, participants will analyze school and student performance to learn and apply strategies that will directly impact the teaching and learning process. The Institute will explicitly address the multiple risk factors effecting students in schools. School teams will define and plan the implementation of a system of instructional support that will align with their school improvement plan to accelerate the progress of every student. Strand connections will be made throughout the year at the School Improvement Conferences.

Districts and schools are encouraged to have teams (e.g. an administrator, instructional coach, and teacher from the same school) attend the institute together. Individuals will be able to attend sessions focused on their role in improving student achievement. At the end of each day, teams will be able to work together in facilitated discussions to plan for maintaining and expanding rigorous programs.

Overnight Accommodations: Radisson Hotel, 111 N. Grand Avenue, Lansing, MI 48933. Cost $65 per night. Ask for MDE Teaching for Learning Institute block of rooms. 517-482-0188.
