Obtaining certification demonstrates a dedication to your profession. The MIEM School Administrative Professional Certification (SAPC) and MSBO certification programs provide the tools you need to become a school leader.
Certification courses are offered through MIEM and the Michigan School Business Officials (MSBO) and provide a great deal of information that you can take back into your district. Most courses are intended to cover major points about respective topics, offer an opportunity for questions and discussion, and provide resource information for future use.
We know that certification provides the skills that you need to perform at your best on the job. Make one of your 2010 resolutions achieving your certification.

MIEM
MIEM offers another venue for you to receive SB-CEUs and continuing certification credit for MSBO certification and SAPC without leaving your desk!
Once you register, with just one fee, you have access to all modules for ONE YEAR! You take these online courses at your own pace. Modules are grouped by Educational Issues, which are geared for people who are at the buildings or in contact with the community. The Technology/Office Training are online courses designed to upgrade your skills in the office environment with such tools like Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and even understanding GPS systems.
As an MIEM member, anyone in the school district can purchase a series at the individual discounted price of $99. Click here to see your learning opportunities and earn credit right away.MSBO’s Certification is a voluntary program to provide focused training. The following classes offer practical information that will help school business officials succeed and excel in their employment. All of these classes will be held at the MELG Building, 1001 Centennial Way in Lansing.

This class is a basic overview of technology in schools. It is recommended as one of the first classes in the program. It covers the following topics: Makeup of the technology team, managing technology in the classroom, training, working with consultants and vendors, business office technology, cost of ownership and outsourcing your technology services.

This class provides an understanding of the basic structure and function of a transportation department, equipment supply and purchase, and laws related to transportation.

Learn the basic structure and function of a food services program, food safety issues, vending and contracting for food services, and cooperative ventures.

Express yourself in a concise and respectful manner to become stronger at being direct and truthful. Build mutually beneficial relationships with co-workers. Reclaim productive time by transforming energy-draining employee negativity into positive energy; problem solve real situations to improve your work environment.
Online courses run for four weeks. You are required to report in at least once a week to complete assignments. You are also required to complete a final project before receiving credit for the class.

8:30-11:45 am • Crisis Management/Safety Issues–R*
Presenter: Tom Mynesberge, Critical Incident Management
Participants will learn techniques and apply them through role play when identifying and addressing safety/security concerns of both students and staff, including: promoting and maintaining a positive school climate; how to respond in an emergency; collaborating with law enforcement, first responders, and local agencies; non-violent intervention strategies/conflict resolution/ mediation; dealing with aggressive students; and managing stress in a dangerous situation.

Increase your understanding of school law issues that affect your responsibilities on a daily basis. This session begins with a general overview. You will learn about the legal requirements of administering medicine to children; releasing students to non-custodial parents or third parties; student discipline; photo/videotape policies; military recruiters; tracking student grades, schedules, and absences and how to handle questions about school records and student files.

The MI-LIFE 21st Century Leadership Program–Continuous Improvement Model (CIM) is a four-day professional learning program for middle school, high school, and alternative high school teams comprised of the principal and 2-3 staff members. The program includes fifty hours over the course of four months: four face-to-face courses with intersession assignments. Participants can earn 5 State Board Continuing Education Units (SBCEUs) upon successful completion of the program.
Working with a Coach from their ISD/RESA, the teams will explore their school’s needs using data, technology, and shared leadership skills. Sessions will cover School Culture, Intersecting Data, Shared Leadership, and Building Capacity for Continuous Improvement.
Sessions will be held at Genesee ISD and Allegan AESA and will begin in February.
The fee for the program is $150 per team.

Differentiated Instruction

As the diversity in Michigan classrooms (and those across the nation) increases and classroom accountability becomes more prevalent, teachers are reaching out for instructional strategies that will help each child achieve. Differentiated instruction is becoming an accepted pathway to achieving educational success. Michigan schools are under severe financial constraint and many out-of-state conferences are beyond the reach of many schools and teachers. Teachers and administrators are also clamoring for practical strategies. This conference will be patterned after the Institute on Academic Diversity run by Dr. Carol Tomlinson at the University of Virginia, and will have “core” instruction in the basics of differentiation and a variety of breakouts.
