SAPC Certification Series Begins in October
Beginning in October, 2007, MIEM is teaming up with Washtenaw ISD to offer the 2007-2008 School Administrative Professional Certification Series (SAPC).

SAPC classes are designed for school office professionals, secretaries and administrative assistants. Learn more here.

In addition, several required SAPC classes will be offered at the 21st Annual Support Staff Conference for Administrative Professionals scheduled November 15–16 in Grand Rapids.

The Nuts And Bolts Of Consolidation And Collaboration

Learn all you need to know about consolidating services and programs and the establishment of effective collaborations between school districts. Topics to be covered include the legal and practical issues around consolidation and collaboration, models for working together to develop a local/regional plan, developing and implementing a communications plan and breakout sessions.

This session takes you through the steps of setting up personnel records, handling FOIA requests, plus addressing policies and procedures. You will explore employee handbooks and learn how workers compensation records should be kept in the personnel file.

Participants will learn the importance of being an ambassador for your school district on or off the job; the importance of keeping the community up-to-date with the school district's goals and challenges; techniques and factors that are considered by public relations specialists when marketing a school district to their community and the appropriate and practical ways to use different avenues of communication.

Using Data To Ask The Right Questions

This workshop will help participants understand the state's measurable targets, identify and collect the appropriate data and set benchmarks, assess and monitor goal attainment, use process engineering strategies to identify areas of slow bleed, runaway costs and low return on investment (ROI). This day-long course is recommended for business managers and curriculum directors to master balancing the budget without sacrificing student success.

Learn the requirements for payroll/personnel records, automated file maintenance, and records retention (Bulletin #522, digital imaging, microfilm, e-mail, etc.). Enhance Your Writing Skills By Publishing Your Article
October 12, 2007

Educators who want to publish articles but have little experience writing for journals and magazines will receive step-by-step help in selecting the right periodical, outlining and opening the article and submitting it to an editor. This is a hands-on writing experience in which participants will learn how to improve their writing skills and complete an outline, a first draft and a letter to an editor.

Site Based Professional Development: On A Shoe String

This workshop will show participants how to successfully plan, implement and utilize study groups, school improvement teams and professional learning communities to collectively address the most pressing educational needs in their own settings. These models are backed by research and address using reality to identify real teaching and learning needs; the support for continuous improvement; collective team work and accountability; the change process and the use of systems thinking.

Participants will learn techniques and apply them through role play when identifying and addressing safety/security concerns including: how to respond in an emergency; collaborating with law enforcement, first-responders and local agencies; non-violent intervention strategies/conflict resolution/mediation; dealing with aggressive students; managing stress in a dangerous situation.

Culture Of Quality Data Symposium

What is a "culture of quality data" and why is this important to you and your school district? This program will focus on the current data that CEPI and the MDE are collecting for high stakes reporting and decisions, and what districts should be doing to ensure the quality of their data.
