How to plan for technology, including forecasting future needs and implementing new systems. This session will provide a more detailed look at technology planning than offered in the other courses and will provide tips and methods for evaluation of new and existing technology. The emerging use of distance learning technologies will also be addressed.


Redefining Literacy For The 21st Century

This day-long session for middle and high school teachers and administrators will present an updated look at adolescent brain research, as well as a look at the demands of the global workplace and what is beyond the traditional content area strategies. The focus will be on strategies that support reading strategies that are not continuous prose such as document and quantitative literacy including technological literacy.

Keynote Speaker Pat Benson, Director of Michigan Schools in the Middle, Central Michigan University, will summarize the data and the best practices learned over the last several years of the Michigan Schools in the Middle program. The Summit will establish a forum in which participants can get a common understanding of effective middle school practices, to learn about the implications of the new high school graduation requirements and redesign on middle schools, to share ideas for proactive planning and to learn about promising middle school practices throughout the state.

February 26 – 28, 2007
The conference format will consist of workshops on Monday, February 26 with general and clinic sessions on February 27 and 28. Monday workshop participants will have the option of choosing among the following three topics:

  • The Power of Formative Assessment, (all day) presented by Karen Bailey, Solution Tree
  • Test Preparation That Raises the Quality of ELA Instruction, (a.m. only) presented by Laura Schiller, Oakland Schools; and
  • Administering the Michigan Merit Examination Assessments, (p.m. only) presented by Jim Griffiths, MDE; Diane Walters, ACT, and Brian Strauss, (Pearson Educational Measurement)

On Tuesday, February 27, hear from Tom Clay, Citizens Research Council of Michigan and Jeremy Hughes, Deputy State Superintendent and Chief Academic Officer. Mr. Nolan Finley, from The Detroit News, will speak on Wednesday. There will be 18 clinics on both Tuesday and Wednesday which will address practical assessment issues facing schools today.
