| Take the Second Step to Success Today! | |
From Mr. Jim Mathis, Leadership Consultant ... we begin with step two of the "Six Steps to Guide You in Planning Ahead for Your Success." “The more you do of what you’re doing, the more you’ll get of what you’ve got.” Tired of getting the same results year and year out? It is time to start planning for success. It is time to try something different. Here’s the second of six steps to help you plan for success in the year ahead. Use them at your next meeting and see how to orient the thinking of your entire organization. If you missed step one, see the October issue of The MIEM Connection. Step Two: Activities. Next, plan the activities it will take to accomplish your goal(s). Don’t schedule them yet. Just sit down and determine what it will take to get to the destination you have set. Some activities may be impossible to pull off, but this will give you a good idea of what you need to be doing and how you need to distribute resources to get things done. Planning activities will help you determine the Big Three questions that need to be answered in planning guidelines: (A) What do you think you are doing? (B) What ought you to be doing? (C) What are you actually doing? Examining all three perspectives will give you valuable insight into your job and time problems. Activities that don’t meet these criteria or don’t support the mission of your company, corporation or mission should be eliminated, no matter how sacred they are. How many exercises do you do for no other reason than, we’ve always done them? Read Sacred Cows Make Great Burgers. Yes, it is risky to ask “why,” but you’ve got to take a few risks to venture into new territory. Have some fun. Go around and ask people how certain historical practices originated and why they continue to schedule them every year. You’ll be surprised at how many people are clueless, but continue to perform them like mindless sheep. Next month 's step will address getting yourself organized priorities. Ken MacGregor, K-16 Coalition Spokesman, says, "To allow for the holiday slowdown, and maximize our reach statewide, the K-16 Coalition has extended our October and November deadlines to December 1 in order to fully meet the deadlines of all our 28 member organizations. That leaves us about three weeks." The K-16 Coalition asks that if you have any petitions with signatures, whether it's two or ten signatures, to please mail them in NOW! We do not want to leave any signature behind! You may mail your petition signatures to: Citizens for Education, P.O. Box 2573, East Lansing, MI 48826-2573. Michigan’s Constitution provides for an initiative petition by citizens who wish to bring specific legislation to the legislature. The process requires some 255,000 +/- registered voters to sign an initiative petition (legislative statute). The 255,000 signatures must be validated. When passed by the Legislature or approved by the voters, this initiative will address:
For further information, please review the "Tips, Hints & FAQs About Circulating Initiative Petitions" and look at the sample Education Funding Guarantee petition (pdf) (The petition may take one-two minutes to download and open). Also, available for your information is "How the Initiative Petition Process Works" (pdf). If you would like to request a petition for obtaining signatures, please fill out the short online PETITION REQUEST form. The Coalition will make certain that pre-printed petitions are mailed to you promptly, with specific circulation instructions. |
