The Michigan ASCD Experienced Instructional Leaders Series is a quarterly professional development series for seasoned curriculum leaders.  The series will provide a forum for curriculum leaders to gather together and dialogue about current issues in the curriculum field, as well as provide each participant with the most current and relevant practices and tools available.

For today’s administrative professional, the pressures to take on increased responsibilities are greater than ever, and often require the use of leadership skills. In this workshop, you will learn about various leadership styles; the characteristics of your own leadership style; how to observe and understand individual differences in people; how to set the tone for a productive workplace; the importance of being a good role model; decision-making skills; how to look at your work and life goals and find a way to maintain balance; the importance of ethics; and how to be recognized as both a doer and a thinker.

We will identify some specific organizational cultures and discover how they “mix” with a variety of leadership styles (your leadership style). Leadership is not something we do in a vacuum. This will be a highly active and practical workshop with plenty of interaction and practical discovery about your leadership style and the culture where you currently lead. You will leave this workshop with tools to apply your leadership style to your specific culture for the purpose of increasing your impact over those you lead.

This session is a three hours of an overview of educational facilities operation with a focus on several key areas. This class discusses the role of the Facilities Manager in the educational community and the impact of facilities in general on the learning and work environment. An outline of the legal and regulatory responsibilities will also be discussed. After lunch the session will continue into Operations Management which includes the role of the Transportation Director in the educational community and the impact of these combined duties in general in the learning and work environment. Any legal and regulatory responsibilities with Transportation will also be discussed.

The focus of this class is primarily to provide facilities directors with ideas and terminology that can help them analyze and communicate issues in their operations from a cost perspective. We will cover life cycle costing concepts, but we’ll also look at facilities benchmarks, energy management, marketing and reporting on the facilities department.
