Over the next couple of weeks, I’m performing in a local theatrical production of It's a Wonderful Life, which is based on the 1946 film about an angel-in-training who gives a despondent man a look at what the world would be like if he had never been born. Part of the dialogue that resonates with me is the angel Clarence’s comments to George about a life well lived. Clarence says, “Strange, isn't it? Each man's life touches so many other lives. When he isn't around he leaves an awful hole, doesn't he?” As we spend time with family and friends this holiday season - take a moment and reflect on people’s lives you touch and those who have helped you. Take the time to let them know you appreciate them. Best wishes from MIEM this holiday season. Dan Pappas, Executive Director |

2009 Crystal Award Winners from left to right: Deb Donohue from Walled Lake Consolidated Schools, Deb Gerber with Office Depot, Roberta Crosby from Tuscola ISD and Karen Stemberger from Plymouth-Canton Community Schools |
For the 8th year, MIEM’s Crystal awards honored the achievements of the professional support staff in school districts throughout Michigan. The Best Practices Award recipient, Karen Stemberger, Coordinator for Staffing, Human Services, Plymouth-Canton Community Schools was recognized for her successful task of stripping the department of paper pushing and moving the district into a technologically efficient operation. The task in an extremely large district with well over 2000 employees was daunting. She has put the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools District on the map for technology and efficiency. This award acknowledges the initiation or establishment of methods, practices, or plans, which have saved their school district money, time, or staff. The Customer Service Award recipient, Roberta Crosby, Administrative Assistant, Tuscola Intermediate School District, is recognized for her outstanding service to internal and external customers. Roberta is known for living the Tuscola Intermediate School District mission statement, “A commitment to serve.” Her thorough understanding of every aspect of her district’s curriculum, board policies to local, state, and federal finances has been immeasurable in assisting others. The Student Services Award winner, Deb Donohue, ESL Paraeducator, Walled Lake Western High School, was recognized for her outstanding assistance to students through mentoring and advisement that extended beyond the bounds of normal job responsibilities. Deb’s primary purpose is to help and give support to the ELL students so they may succeed in the classroom and life. Students, staff and administration recognized Deb for her dedication to making the decisions that are academically sound and culturally sensitive. Congratulations to this year’s MIEM Crystal Award winners! Once again, thank you to Office Depot for their sponsorship of these awards. |

| Support Staff Scholarship Winners | |
MEEMIC Insurance Company and MIEM joined forces to offer two full scholarships to the 23rd Annual MIEM Support Staff Conference for Administrative Professionals, which was recently held in Grand Rapids. Following are this year’s scholarship winners. Congratulations!
I am greatly appreciative of having received this scholarship. I would not have been able to attend had it not been for MEEMIC’s partnership with MIEM. I was able to enjoy the breakout sessions and interact with colleagues (in my ISD especially), which we do not get to do often enough.
Jyll Reed is featured with local MEEMIC representative, Randy Cagwin and the Superintendent of Detroit Edison Public School Academy, Ralph Bland. I just wanted to take this opportunity to tell you how wonderful I thought the conference was!!! I enjoyed all the topics I took. I wish I could have taken more. It was so exciting and informative. I came away with a lot of fresh ideas of how I could make a difference. I really do thank you for allowing me to be a part of such a wonderful event. I look forward to attending many, many more sessions. Again thank you for such a fantastic opportunity. |
