For today’s administrative professional, the pressures to take on increased responsibilities are greater than ever, and often require the use of leadership skills. In April, I will be teaching the online SAPC course, The Leader in You. Most of us have an idea of what it takes to be a leader or what leadership means to us. Some of us may believe that leaders are born. We also know that leadership skills can be developed and learned. We all can become leaders in our work environment and in our school districts. While you may not see yourself as a leader within the context of your current job, you likely exhibit many leadership skills in how you work with others on your staff and faculty, and in your relationship with students as well in your personal life and community. This course is designed to help you see the leadership capacity inside yourself. Therefore, consider and reflect on how you exhibit leadership characteristics in other settings as well as in your current employment. In this workshop, you will learn about various leadership styles and the characteristics of your own leadership style. You will learn techniques on observing and understanding individual differences in people, and how to set the tone for a productive workplace. Other highlights include the importance of being a good role model, learning decision-making skills and the importance of ethics. Perhaps, the most important aspect of the class comes in examining work and life goals and finding a way to maintain balance. Dan Pappas To learn more about The Leader in You, log on to goMIEM.org. Title III Professional Development for Teachers of English Language Learners Title III of No Child Left Behind requires professional development of K-12 teachers and staff so that their English language learners (ELLs) can make academic progress in content area subjects while also acquiring and strengthening their skills toward greater English language proficiency. In the summer of 2010, the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) will provide substantive, research-based professional development opportunities by organizing and supporting several regional SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol) workshops for teams of ESL and general education (content area/classroom) teachers from local school districts. Each workshop will accommodate approximately 40-50 persons. Sponsored by MDE and Great Lakes East Comprehensive Center, leaders from the Center for Applied Linguistics (Washington D.C.) will conduct the four-day workshops with the assistance of Michigan teacher-leaders who have completed SIOP train-the-trainer sessions earlier in the summer. The workshops will be held in three regions in Michigan with significant demographic representation of ELLs. The specific locations for the summer workshops will be: Oakland Schools (NW Detroit metro area) • July 19-22, 2010 |
