Get The Latest Information on ARRA Funding and Technology at the Educational Technology Leadership Conference

June 22-23, 2009 • Holt High School, Holt MI

Still confused about what you need to do to ensure your school gets American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds? Bruce Umpstead, Michigan Department of Education Office of Educational Technology and Data Coordination, will be on hand to answer your questions about ARRA and how it affects technology in education with Title II Part D funds.

The ETLC, hosted by the Michigan Institute for Educational Management (MIEM) and the Michigan Association for Computer Users in Learning (MACUL) is aimed at:

  • school technology directors
  • technicians
  • administrators
  • school board members
  • other educators at the local, regional and state level

Don’t miss out on the latest update concerning technology funding through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009. The conference will also feature a panel discussion on the merits and drawbacks of social network sites and MSBO certification classes.

In addition to a large exhibits area, the conference will feature breakout sessions on these topics: SafeSchools, working with your board of education, online learning, online professional development, integrating technology into the curriculum, school websites, Internet safety, learning management systems, technology support services, VMware, Google, Technology and differential learning, eBooks, SharePoint, web based curriculum development, professional learning networks, 1:1 computing, Web 2.0, Budgeting for IT, METS standards refresh, IT controls review, Michigan Schools Online and network security.

This special one-day conference is designed for MEAP Coordinators, MME Testing Staff, MI-Access Coordinators, MEAP-Access Coordinators, ELPA Coordinators, NAEP School Coordinators, Curriculum Coordinators, Assessment Specialists and School Administrators. This conference features 40 informational clinic sessions.

Beyond Compliance: Renewing Our Commitment to ALL Children–The Annual Homeless Education Conference

September 13-15, 2009 Location: Kellogg Center, East Lansing

Join us for the Annual Homeless Education Conference, featuring keynote addresses by Barbara Duffield, Policy Director of the National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth; Phillip Lovell, Vice President of Education for First Focus; and Diane Nilan, Founder and President of Hear Us, Inc. Breakout sessions will focus on McKinney-Vento Law 101 & 201; Foster Care; Title I; Housing First; Domestic Violence; Tutoring; Special Education; Project Homeless Connect; Collaboration; Transportation Strategies; Unaccompanied Youth; Data Collection and Reporting; and Higher Education.

Registration is only $65 for all three days. Two nights lodging and conference meals are FREE for school staff and their invited collaborative partners for this conference. Other agency and organization staff is welcome to register and attend the conference at the $65 fee but will need to cover their own overnight lodging.

Making Content Comprehensible to ELL’s Using the SIOP Model

The four-day institute is designed for a cadre of both classroom and English Language Learner (ELL) specialists to work together to learn and apply the SIOP methods to their everyday teaching situations. Following the Institute, teachers will be able to work together to implement the strategies in their classrooms. Title III funds can be used for the cost of this institute.

July 27-30, 2009 – Kent ISD

August 10-13, 2009 – Plymouth-Canton Community Schools

August 24-27, 2009 – Macomb ISD

Cost: $150 per person. This includes registration, meals and materials for all 4 days.

Michigan Teaching For Learning Institute - Igniting the Sparks of Genius

Tuesday, August 18, 2009 to Thursday, August 20, 2009 Lansing Center

Districts and schools are encouraged to have teams (e.g. an administrator, coach, and teacher from the same school) attend the institute together. Each individual will be able to attend sessions focusing on his or her role in improving student achievement. At the end of each day, teams will be able to work together in facilitated discussions to plan for maintaining and expanding rigorous programs.

Everything You Need to Know About Identity Theft Workshop

Location: MELG Building, Lansing
Identity Theft Loss Prevention, LLC has teamed up with MSBO, MASA and MASB to present information on the demands of safeguarding personal, financial, medical and business information in school districts. This workshop is designed to address identity theft compliance requirements, and to assist school districts in making a reasonable effort to safeguard information systems. It is a behavioral, operational, and technological approach to assess and reduce the risk of fraud, theft, or loss during the collection, handling, storage, communication, transmission, transfer, and destruction of confidential and sensitive information in the workplace.
